Companion Program


We Step In When You Step Out

Our Companion Program is a non-medical basic support service designed to meet the needs of individuals who need monitoring or socialization. Clients may be cared for in their place of residence or in their caregiver’s home. The goal of this program is to bring socialization, understanding and friendship to your loved one as well as ensuring their safety in your absence.

Who are companions?

  • Mature adults who are employed by the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills and have completed an orientation and training program
  • Companions are supervised by a VNA Registered Nurse


What do companions do?

  • Prepare and serve a light meal
  • Read aloud, write notes and help with personal correspondence
  • Play games or cards
  • Go for a short walk
  • Light shopping, errands and housekeeping
  • Accompanying client to appointments
  • Companions cannot assist with duties such as bathing, nail cutting, dispensing medications

What does a companion cost and how do I schedule one?

  • An assessment is completed by a Registered Nurse and a client plan of care is developed
  • Companions are scheduled weekdays and weekends depending on availability
  • There are no overnight assignments
Companions cost $15 per hour, based on a 2-hour minimum.
