A well-deserved “time out” for the caregiver.
What is Respite Care?
The Respite Care Program offers Somerset County families short-term relief from the everyday fatigue and stress of caring for a frail elder or disabled adult.
Respite Care services are available in case of emergency, or to allow the caregiver the opportunity to take a vacation, attend a family function, or simply get the break needed in order to be able to continue to tend for the care recipient.
What services are available?
- Companions or sitters in the home
- Certified Home Health Aide (when personal care services are necessary)
- Social or medical day care
- Vacation or emergency respite in an assisted living or skilled nursing facility
- Short-term 24 hour live-in Home Health Aide
Who is eligible to receive respite care?
- Families or individuals providing unpaid basic daily care at home to a functionally impaired adult age 18 or older
- Residents of Somerset County
What does respite care cost?
There is a cost share component for the Respite services provided. This cost share is based on the income and liquid assets of the care recipient, or on the combined income and liquid assets of the care recipient and spouse. The caregiver's finances are not considered when calculating the cost share of the service (unless the caregiver is also the spouse) and the cost share or co-payment may be 0 to 80% of the contracted cost of service.
