Volunteers have always been an important part of the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills team. From becoming a Friendly Visitor for our homebound elderly patients, to providing a needed break for caregivers, lending a hand at our annual rummage sale or in the office, and much more, our volunteer network offers many unique and challenging ways to become a part of our family.
What volunteer programs are offered?
There are many different volunteer programs available. These include:
- Hospice and Home Care: Provide respite for caregivers, caring companionship to our patients and sometimes providing transportation for necessary medical appointments.
- Friendly Visitor: Visit the homebound elderly and/or disabled in their home to help alleviate the loneliness and isolation.
- Parish Nursing: Assist individuals in maintaining wellness while meeting the unique need of each congregation.
- Rummage Sale: Be a part of our semi-annual rummage sale, the major fundraiser for the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills, joining more than 250 working volunteers that make this event a success. (click here for more information on Rummage Sales)
- Office Clerks: Lend a helping hand in our office, located just off the Bernardsville town square, and be a part of the heart of our organization.
- Adult Day Center of the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills : Help make and serve coffee in the morning, pick up and serve lunch, provide an afternoon program or work one-on-one with clients helping with puzzles or playing cards.

Do I need training to become a volunteer?
We are dedicated to providing the best quality volunteer services to our patients and to our organization. To ensure that our volunteers are knowledgeable and prepared, we provide free, targeted training programs in their areas of interest.
- Hospice/Home care volunteers attend 18 hours of training over six weeks and participate in ongoing educational opportunities. Call or view our calendar for dates and and times.
- Friendly Visitor Volunteers participate in an initial 3 hour training session and are encouraged to participate in ongoing educational programs. There are several training opportunities each year.
- Parish nurses are trained by our Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills Parish Nurse coordinator.
We welcome family members and caregivers of Hospice patients as volunteers for our Hospice and other VNA programs, upon completion of a minimum 13 month bereavement period.
