Staff Accountant

JOB SUMMARY: The Staff Accountant is responsible for the monthly general ledger close and analysis along with assisting the Senior Accountant and Director of Finance and Business Development with analysis related to the general ledger, financial statements, budget preparation and variance analysis, cost analyses and other analyses as required/assigned.

REPORTS TO: Director of Finance and Business Development


  • Associate or higher degree in accounting or related field
  • 5-10 years related experience and/or training

Full responsibility for:

  • recording all of the financial transaction-journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, revenue/expense accruals, billing for the Adult Day Center and Private Duty programs, etc.
  • monthly reconciliation of all bank accounts
  • general ledger month-end close with appropriate accruals
  • preparation of General Ledger entries and reconciliations for month-end closing to close books in an accurate and timely manner
  • Preparation of monthly account analysis of balance sheet and income statement accounts; with a summary of pertinent explanatory notes

Assist with:

  • analysis of general ledger accounts and financial statements on a monthly basis and explaining budget variances
  • preparation of annual budgets
  • documentation and monitoring of internal controls
  • preparation of internal financial statements and external annual financial audit process
    and audited financial statements, including general ledger subsidiary/other schedules, audited financial statements and supplemental information
  • the establishment of system controls for new financial systems and develops procedures to improve existing systems
  • Primary support for the Insurance Verification Specialist & Payroll Administrator relative to health insurance eligibility/authorization functions and payroll processing
  • Maintains general and subsidiary ledgers, accounts receivable, revenue recognition and distribution, depreciation, costs, property, operating expenses, and insurance applications/records
  • Prepares external audit materials as required by external auditor

  • Account for and maintain fixed assets and related depreciation consistent with company policies and procedures
  • Other duties/projects as assigned


  • Strong understanding of accounting and maintenance of general ledger accounts, subsidiary ledgers and schedules
  • Strong knowledge of all accounting functions and related internal controls, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, investments, reserves and fixed assets
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to research and reconcile accounts
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with a customer service focus
  • Expertise with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines
  • Working knowledge of grant accounting and cost/profit center accounting
